Irish Townlands
What are they and how can I capture them?

Irish Townlands are the smallest officially recognised land divisions in Ireland, used for primarily for mapping and addressing. There are over 60,000 Townlands across the island, each with a unique name, often derived from historical or geographical features. They predate modern postal systems and were originally used for taxation and land ownership.

Today, Townlands remain part of postal addresses in many rural areas and are maintained by Ordnance Survey Ireland and Northern Ireland’s Land and Property Services but are not commonly included in standard address databases. Despite the more common use now of Eircodes for location-based accurate addresses, including Townland data in address validation can help to ensure accurate, locally recognised addressing in remote areas or for non-shipping related address requirements.Townlands are not included in the standard Fetchify address data for the Republic of Ireland or Northern Ireland but are available as a Double Dependent Locality for the Republic of Ireland only, in our Eircodes Enriched Dataset.
